Not a dumb question..wondered it myself...
Now what the criteria for going to Burning Crusade to get past 300. Do you need to be at certain LvL, having trouble just getting to the door...

And you need to be atleast lvl 50 to train 300+ prof. skill. Ask a Mage for a port to Shattrath, then ride to Honor Hold/Thrallmar.

There is no level requirement for the portal itself, that was lifted ages ago. Just ride through it and fly to HH/Thrallmar. Everyone has that flight path from the start.
