Ret or prot with pally priest duo

hey everyone me and a friend are making some new chars hes going to be holy priest and im rolling a paladin i was just wondering if i should spec ret or protection ill be doing the damage while he does the healing we.ll probably be doing instances together aswell and id like to try and tank,just not sure whether protection would be good for leveling any advice would be appreciated thank you

You can level as prot, it's possible. Just like it's possible for your priest friend to level as holy. However... If all you want is to level up as quickly as possible, you should go ret while your friend goes shadow. That will make questing much faster and if you want to do instances, you can carry a 1 hander and a shield and your friend can still heal and all will be fine till outlands.
On the other hand, if your not worried about time or (like me) you really enjoy being prot and want to have the experiences of tanking before you hit 80, then by all means level prot. With a pocket healer, you can basically aggro a ton of guys, aoe em down and still be at max health and mana (after getting BoSanc). It's lots of fun, but one caveat.. you have to remember that when you switch to your alts, they don't have the same ability to survive and kill 10-20 guys at once...

haha ill remember that mate tats just what i needed hes going to be healer in end game so needs all the practice he can get,same as me wanting to be tank in end game so i also need all the practice i can get,pointless hitting 80 and not having a clue,thanks alot for replying mate
