You will go Enhancement, eventually dual wielding slow axes/maces/fists. Your focus is on Attack Power and Crit %. AP can be achieved by strength (1 ap per point), Agility (1 AP per point), Intellect (1.1 AP per point if you have Mental Dexterity and ancestral Knowledge), and plain Attack Power from items.
Generally, you will gear yourself like a hunter. The trick is to have a balance between your AP and your Crit %.

use leather gear that includes strength / stamina / attack power
at 40, u can wear mail armor.
Strength only gives 1 AP per point now, making Agility more useful than strength now. It's fine if the item has strength, but pure AP and AGI beat it in usefulness.

1-40? elemental, with water shield is nothing called mana problem!
40+ keep elemental or go ench (note: ench is much more gear dependent then ele)

Hello and welcome to the shaman class! hope my input helps. I would recommend going to the class forums here along with looking over the talent trees. Enhance is melee dps with dual wielding. elemental is cast dps. resto is healing. My favorite for leveling is enhance with two slow maces. widfury weapon on both while spamming earthshock. Totems are your best friend, but can be overwhelming. There are some really nice addons to manage all you will get. TBH 2-3 get dropped constantly while the rest are situational. Gearwise I look for intellect first and spirit last. Mainly bc I like a large mana pool with water shield. It really depends what spec you are for stat priority.
