Your only real shot in my opinion is get known for your skill level. I don't typically pug, but that hasn't stopped me from doing it here and there when I'm bored and I have a good rep on Destromath of someone to look up if you want a rogue for something. (Timed Strat seems to be the most I'm called on for) You have to keep in mind there are A LOT of other rogues out there, and you will have to fight the rogue stigmata of idiocy. Also, Wrath has kind of done rogues a disservice in the area of dps, since most heroics and 10mans are being AoE'd into the ground, something we of course lack in. And when you can take an AoE capable class that has similar if not better single target dps (BM hunters I'm looking at you. Enjoy the nerfs.) it's hard to get picked up.

My 2 cents: Since my guld is a social one i only do PUGs. I admit i had problems at the begining because of the bad reputation that rogues have. After i did some heroics ppl that i went with and were happy with my performance added me to their fiends list and have taken me to other heroics hence at he moment i do one heroic after another. I am actually happy with the bad reputation o rogues because it gives me the oportunity to shine :). On the other hand i don't agree with the whole "we rogues r discriminated, we don't have raid utility, our dps sucks, etc"....i only been outdamaged very few times and i don't have the best gear or stuff like that. It's all about knowing your character, using the right spec , the best rotation and having half a brain. On the matter of TotT...it's an imba skill if u use it well....much better then hunter's misdirect and it has a huge heroc and raid importance. And btw we do have AOE and a good one: BF+Killing spree+FOK = 3k dps and a huge treath pool for the tank.

TL;DR
@OP: My personal experience is that with the current Heroics situation (read: AoE!) there aren't as many reasons to take Melee DPS at all, in comparison to a Lock, Mage, Boomkin, etc. Whilst you can still provide good DPS in Heroics, so can a DK if Melee is a must, and buff the group.

actually i don't have a problem to find group on my server. Everyone is grinding rep and they don't want other cloties or plate wearer to roll on their loot.
Also, do what you can to save your healer since there is a healer shortage, if you have good rep with them, you will be re-invite more often.
There is plenty of stuff that is not dps that you can Do, TotT, Blind/stun/gouge a target running to healer Disarm some hard hitting boss (like the third boss in UT pinacle, if you can disarm him before his bladestorm, group will take a lot less damage. Dont forget to kick. Tank will love a rogue that kick a mobs and bring it in melee range.
But most of the time, rogue are DPS OR DIE. they are not aware of the environement stuck in their rotation and die and then are like "WTF healer why you did not healed me?"

Side question, does bf actually work with killing spree? I thought they weren't going to allow that
it does work, fortunately ^_^
As for OP, well i guess people on your server simply encountered some badly skilled/geared rogues. As for me (Jaedenar EU), I mostly PuG heroics because not all of my guildies might be free at the time - and I haven't encountered people who simply "didn't wanna group with a rogue".
My advice is - when you do get into a good PuG, remember the healer and the tank! add them to your friends and try to PuG with them more often - I do the same, and eventually they remember you too.
As an example, as soon as I logged in today, I was asked by a resto dru who I've PuG'ed a lot with to join his party (he also found a decent tank). As a result, I did three heroics in almost three hours with only a couple of accidental wipes
