You can read a tons of guides, but it won't make the whole lot different really.
Just remember, that you (as a mage?) should always use spellsteal / counterspell when you should use it. (To avoid healing / damage)
Rogue / Mage combo can be nasty, but it reliese a lot on using all your ability at the right time, and avoid damage as much as possible.
But as I tryed to say before ->
Experience > Knowledge
I recome you team with this guy in different Battlegrounds and Arena training before even considering going to Arena.

The rogue should specc mut/prep (41/5/25,rather high burst), shadowdance daggers (very high burst), or shadowdance picking up hemorrhage (good mobility and control) if he uses a non-dagger mainhand.

is the way to go, Don't take Initiative, It messes up combo building, he should open with Cheap Shot/Garrote and 2x Mut(Or 1 Cold Blood Mut then some finisher). Ruthlessnes - Same thing. You should grab camo, but its not necesarry to max it.
Basic PvP for Mut Rogue - Cheap Shot(Garrote if Mage to prevent Blink), 2x Mut or 1 CB Mut, then if opponent is low on HP eviscerate, if like on half then Kidney Shot, and Rupture the Mages because they blink out of the stun. After that there are many variations what you should do, I think your friend should read some guides, maybe watch some PvP vids.

Homemade Shadowdance dagger spec.
A macro for changing action bar for shadowdance:
#showtooltip shadow dance
/changeactionbar 2
/cast shadow dance
And first you add your stealth abilities to action bar 2.
If you go mutilate, use wounding poison on off hand and mind numbing on mainhand.
If you go shadowdance, wounding main hand and crippling off hand.

Lawl he doesnt ever take puncturing wounds... are you serious...
rogues crit chance has been reduced in Wotlk it seems, that +15% to crit is alot more useful then then bonus DoT, you really only want 2 use dots on other rogues... -.-
and 1 point in Camo is pointless, the minus armor is worth the 3 points even without the rup
If i remember a while back your the dude that said in 3.0.2., combat was the best pvp spec.....

That stuff is kind of depended on person playing IMO, maybe 1 point in camo is useless to you, but when you'll want to re-stealth quickly, you wont think like that(With mut you kill things fast, you know :) ). Armor minus is not that big. However yeah, I probably underestimated Puncturing Wounds. And for the other thread, I said Combat might compete with Mut, not that It's the best.
