I'm not sure exactly why it's needed to disable everything on the site when adding new data, it only seams to be impacted by when there's a lot of changes, but it's quiet annoying to come find the database inaccessible. Perhaps a read-only mode such as how flickr does it's updates, that way you can control modifying the database by disabling new forum post, new screenshots, new comments while the new data is added and everything is processed. Also now that ZAM owns Wowhead, I suppose there's a copy of the whole site that you can do testing on, so why not just have the data uploaded to the testing server, then when it's all working do a mysql sync.

Hi there,
Downtime is not something we like having. We try to limit it as much as possible, and only bring the site down at the lowest access hours, and never for over ~10 mins for the big updates.
Maintenance, happening on a more irregular basis, is unavoidable.
We're working on changes to the way we do updates, and it should occur less and less over time. However the changes to do so are massive and it's not something we can "just release". We'll let you know when this will be updated.
