Imo, it depends on the speed your group is killing the mobs. If it's taking a while then I think SoC is the better choice, because all the ones you throw will have time to explode and deal the damage. Now, if your group is butt-raping the mobs; RoF is better since you don't have to wait for something to explode to do the damage.

indeed, in fact that's the whole point of coefficients.
seed for aff. RoF for destro.
however, it's close enough for MC to be really important for RoF damage and as such it may be best to start with a seed or shadowfury/shadowflame to proc MC then go to RoF

It is nice that Channeled AoE spells can crit now. One thing to factor into this comparison is AoE damage caps.
RoF
:
spell coefficient: 95.2%
cast time 8s, unhasted
AoE damage cap: about 28K(in tBC)
SoC
:
spell coefficient: 150% dot/ 22% direct
cast time 2s, unhasted
AoE damage cap: about 13k(in tBC)
To compare would take 4SoCs vs 1 RoF. At the high end, the AoE damage caps leave SoC as champ. 52k>28k any day of the week.
Hard to do math to figure out where the SP break point will be since the AoE cap is reached faster with each additional mob hit by the attack. Remember the bonus damage from crits do not count against the damage cap so crit will not be a deciding factor in the comparison.
A destro lock's fire damage scaling makes RoF very attractive under the AoE cap.
A demo lock that does not have emberstorm will probably do better with SoC as well.

I was not fully aware of how the whole aoe damage cap worked, thanks Blightman. Where can I find numbers for this?

Those are tBC numbers. I have not seen anything indicating that those have changed.
