For those of you who wonder why spell penetration is brought up in a thread regarding hunter PvP:
, Chimaera Shot
Traps do however not benefit from our spell penetration, but the shots above do, and regardless of which spec you use, you'll use some of the abilities listed above a lot of the time.
As for Daefaroth:
To my and Wowhead's knowledge, Vivid Dream Emerald
still only gives 20 spell penetration (which is indeed odd since Stormy Ocean Sapphire
gives 50 spell penetration and all(?) other green/purple/orange gems give 50% of the stats from blue/red/yellow gems). This is slightly unfortunate because if the green gem gave 25 spell penetration we would hit 195 spot on (Enchant Cloak - Lesser Power
, 2 Stormy Ocean Sapphire
and 1 Vivid Dream Emerald
), so myself I just go for 190 spell penetration and hope they add the 5 resilience to the gem before the next expansion. It's well worth getting 190 spell penetration, people do run around with resistances so getting some spell penetration helps noticeably.
Stamina gems on the other hand is not that great once you reach an acceptable resilience rating. With my current talents (which include
) I seem to get about 17 hit points per stamina, and stamina gems comes either as 60 or 30 + another stat. For me that's either 510 or 1020 hit points.
Resilience on the other hand is slightly more tricky (it's a bit early for me, I can't guarantee that the following math is correct). Let's say you got 120k HP in your PvP gear and 0 resilience (if this is the case you seriously need to find new PvP gear, but play along for the example). Then you put in a +40 resilience gem which gives you about 0.42% damage reduction (95 resilience rating gives 1% damage reduction). Losing all that 120000 hit points with 0.42% damage reduction means that the enemy had to deal this much damage:
120000 / (1 - (40/95/100)) = 120507.4 (or the resilience "gave" 507.4 more hit points)
No wait, what? That makes the +60 stamina gem better than resilience! And yes, if you got 0 resilience and
then the stamina gem is indeed better.
Well, to be more precise, this is not entirely correct, this assumed no healing. Once healing comes in the value of resilience increase further, with stamina gem you'd have to use a resource (mana, potions, bandages, etc) to restore the lost hit points, with resilience gem you wouldn't lose the hit points in the first place and thus not need to restore it.
However, let's assume you got some real PvP gear and you already got 20% damage reduction, how much impact would resilience then make?
120000 / (1 - (0.2 + 40/95/100)) - 120000 / (1 - 0.2) = 793.7
Stamina gem still is better, but resilience now quickly close in. Same math with 30% damage reduction and adding the gem:
120000 / (1 - (0.3 + 40/95/100)) - 120000 / (1 - 0.3) = 1037.4
At roughly 30% resilience becomes better (even lower if you don't have
, but too lazy to calculate those numbers now).
Some claim there's a 40% resilience cap (I'm not convinced about that, I've not seen any reliable sources verifying this), so let's calculate for that as well:
120000 / (1 - (0.4 + 40/95/100)) - 120000 / (1 - 0.4) = 1413.4
40% damage reduction isn't really that hard to achieve, I got 39% damage reduction in my current PvP gear, which is mostly bought with honor points.
Hunters still are the favorite piñata of most people (it seems so, at least), so I do recommend stacking up on both resilience and stamina (but resilience > stamina), sacrificing damage in the process. Hunters excel at sustained DPS, but our burst is lacking, we need to outlast the enemy because we don't really have the element of surprise which a sudden burst of damage is.
This feature of resilience getting better the more you get is what worries me a bit when it comes to healers, with reduced damage taken the fights lasts longer and you need to heal less. Healing needed decrease significantly faster than damage increases as people get better gear, I suspect this scaling is not very well balanced.
that what I play my another SV hunter in the pvp server :P
