Well, the hardest thing to realize is that if people have 80k hp left out of 100k then they are fine. If you healed in WotLK then you were brought thinking to top everyone off. Now not so much… Usually I only top off the tank. Spam healing wave and keep riptide and ES up and you will do fine. Truthfully your group shouldn't take all that much damage, if so maybe you should see if they are standing in something bad or such. Sorry if my thoughts seem scrambled, getting groggy and about to go to bed. But really the only main healing spells I use are Healing Wave, Greater Healing Wave, Riptide, and Earthshield. Sometimes I use healing rain but that is because I have the heroic stonecore trinket that helps with my spirit on crits so I basically get the spirit for a quick regen when I use healing rain. In a pinch you can use Healing Surge but then again you shouldn't get into any pinches with a good group. Also, don't be afraid to tell the tank that you would like some Crowd Control. It makes things a hell of a lot smoother. Also on a side note, we are getting a buff to purification. They are raising it to 25% instead of a 10% increase to healing spells. Have fun healing!

Hey guys, I came back for cata and I've been having some problems healing in Heroic instances.
The main problem I have is when the entire group is taking damage, I have hard time keeping on top of everyone with riptide/ghw but chain heal/healing rain don't heal enough in a pinch. And it doesn't take very long before I run oom
spamming ghw
, I was wondering if anyone had any tips or pointers for me.
Thank you,

That's the fastest way to oom yourself. Riptide and Healing Wave should be your most used spells in a 5 man.

Or Riptide and Healing Surge.
Healing Surge actually is surprisingly mana efficient with the 30% crit buff from Riptide (or CH). Just make sure to only cast it when the crit is not wasted and the TW proc is actually up.
I almost never use GHW in dungeons, usually it's just Riptide, HS and standing idle waiting for damage to happen that's worth healing.

Riptide - HS should easily keep the tank up. If it doesn't then he is doing something wrong.
My gear is far from great (not a single raid item) and I could easily keep a fresh DK tank in ilvl339 PvP items alive through his first HC run.
Just don't be afraid to use HS (with Tidal Waves up). It's really not that inefficient.
As for the group damage: Healing Rain should be able to take care of that. If it doesn't then your group is probably doing something wrong (standing in the fire, not using CC correctly).
As a healer you usually can't compensate for the mistakes of your group anymore, at least not until you have plenty of raiding gear.
If a single dps takes too much damage: Riptide - HS will fix it. If he is taking even more damage: Let him die, heal the tank instead, he was probably standing in fire anyway.
The most important thing to learn is to not waste your whole mana pool on a stupid dps who is taking unnecessary damage all the time. This will lead to you OOMing and the tank dying which is bad. Just let the dps die instead and keep the rest of the group alive, they can kill the mobs and after rezzing the dps you can tell him to move out of bad things ;)

MegaVolt has some really good info in his post. Piggybacking on that, the "triage" idea is really important when everyone is still gearing up in heroics. Getting comfortable with leaving dps at 60~80% HP is important. Breaking the WotLK mentality of keeping everyone topped off at all times took me a run to two to do. Riptide heals a lot on it's own, hitting someone at 60~80% with just riptide can be enough to keep them safe.
