Now,
what this means in-game is that classes with lower totals in their chosen spec can select more talent points in a 'minor' tree/s without sacrificing points from their major spec tree.
This is not a true statement. You need 31 talent points to get to the bottom of any tree of any class. Every class/spec has 10 extra points that they can either put into their main tree, or spread out into "minor" trees.
# of talents in a tree doesn't mean anything other than you have a few more options. It definitely does not speak to the quality of those options either.
Yes, but what he's saying is that if you onl yneed the minimum 31 points in a single tree to get the most out of it, why should you spec more into that tree when you can spec into other trees.
Example. Arcane mage PvP spec. Lots of good talents there, only about 1 or 2 talents that aren't necessary. In order for you to get the most of the tree, you're going to have to spend around 36 points in that one tree alone, and in order for you to get to the second tier of talents in another tree, you're oging to have to sacrifice some of those points.
Where as if you only need to spend the required 31 points in a tree in order grab all the good talents, then you can use 10 points in another tree without making that sacrifice.

Forty-one points spent on useful talents is forty-one points spent. Why would it matter in which tree(s) the last ten are spent?

Yep, there really is no reason for Blizzard to go all out making sure every tree has the same number of talents. Once you are done with your first 31, you choose 10 more... it makes no difference if you put those back in your main tree or put them in a different tree.... I think almost all specs end up about the same.. if you mainly endgame pve, you will end up putting your 10 points in a different tree. If you PVP, many of those 10 points will go back into your main tree.
