I use
Omen
,
TankPoints
,
Tank Warnings
,
Recount
and
Deadly Boss Mods
.
Personally I don't think that any of the above are essential and they will certainly not make you a better tank.

It's pretty much essential to have a meter to measure your TPS. How would you otherwise work on maximizing your threat generation?
IMO Deadly Boss Mods or BigWigs or smiliar are pretty much essential too until you can farm the encounter with no problems. After that it's still helpful.
I myself also use NeedToKnow to create a bar showing my remaining shield block time. I use that to time my Shockwave/shield blocks. I find it easier to watch a bar than to have to watch the blizzard UI buff icons.

Fair point, although I've never needed to fight for TPS so the need for it hasn't been so great. Mind you, I've always been able to see my threat percentage on a tooltip and I do rely on that at times - just not the raw numbers.

Omen shows your TPS and total threat pretty good.
As for addons. Always have been using X-pearl - its more a frames addon but it has some nice features for tanking (eg. showing which person of your team gets focused by mob by a red glow of their unit frame).
I also got
Mtlove
which offers you a mouseover check of the targets target.
I know that after patch 3.0 its possible to get rid of the x-pearl and mtlove, but i prefer to have them.
I also got
sct Battle shout
, which basically does a sound and sct warning after a shout is applied and a few seconds before it finishes. Used this as fury. Its very usefull as tank as well. Works for both your shouts and raid/group shouts.

if your a bit of a quick runner like me, you might want to get Quick Marks. Instead of having to right click on the person, just target them, and you can click on the symbol in a small box. I personally use it when i tank, its nice to have when your doing a bit of a faster run. And need to tell who to sheep.

this is the link for quickmarks.

I tried the addon, but it still involves more time and clicking than simple keybindings.

I wouldn't call any addon essential. Helpful, but not essential. Threat addons and DBM will make it easier but aren't required. If one needs such addons to progress then it means one needs to become a better player. DBM is almost playing the game for you.
Addons should be convenient, they should never play the game for you. If you find yourself unable to progress in something then you should find a way to improve yourself, not find an addon which will do it for you. So my point is that one should rely on themselves rather than some addon.
But a threat addon to test your TPS so you can find out how you can improve your threat generation is pretty convenient. Once you've figured out how to maximize your threat, it's becomes pretty redundant.

No.
This sounds like typical "I'm so 1337 I don't need addons" tripe. Deadly Boss Mods does not even come close to playing the game for you, in fact I can't even get mine to move my toon at all, let alone when I need it too. It doesn't get gear for me, farm mats, do dailies, it gets my boss rotations all wrong. It does not play the game for you.
As for Omen (or whichever), yeah you can use it to measure your TPS, but the real reason you have it is for your dps. Thats right, its not all about you, its so that
others
know where you are on threat, thus allowing them to max out damage without pulling aggro.
I'm not saying I think that addons are mandatory, but the crap about DBM playing the game for you is pure BS. Of course it can all be done without addons, but why gimp yourself? Just because it is possible for someone to play one-handed doesn't mean that using two is cheating.

I don't mean to sound like I think I'm better than others, I just find addons such as DBM to be redundant. No, they don't literally play the game for you, I was making an overstatement. I just don't like addons which simplifies the game, which I believe such addons do. I don't care if people use such addons, but I'll never do so myself. I would actually be glad if Blizzard decided to mark them as "illegal", cause I do see them as a form of cheating. That's only my personal opinion though.
Again, sorry if I came off as being arrogant.
