Game sound muting? If you mean the in-game voice chat system (and not Ventrilo itself), it's in the Voice options, bottom right area, move the sliders to "Off".
If you mean Ventrilo itself, I don't think there is a way to mute game sounds when you talk. I've never heard of that capability.
I had a problem similar to that, with my own music on my computer. I listen to it very quietly as background noise and people said they couldn't hear me over my incredibly loud music.
I just went into the Vent options and played around with a lot of different things to fix it, I don't remember exactly.
