You get a truckload of some of them while gathering. Its not uncommon for me to get 100 or more Vol.Life in 30m minutes while herbing, and the same goes for Vol.Earth while mining. Also mining will give you a smaller number of Water and Fire as well.
Apart from that, Alchy's can transmute 15 Life into a random other Volitile, and being x-mute specced, I have gotten close to 40 from 1 transmute.

I usually found having my xmute spec toon do the
transmuting
for my airs I get... been getting between 14 to up to 45 each day. So, it is possible for someone to do, lets say random heroics, hit VP get a few airs there, and then transmute right before midnight server, and then again after and get that many airs.

Did you bother checking the database before asking on the forums? Going to the pages for the different Volatiles and reading the comments will give you some suggestions for farming them.

volatile life are extremely easy to get. Once you have them, it is easy to turn 15 of them into something else every day just by going to a specific zone. Ie.. transmute life to air in Uldum. It´s every easy to get 15, sometimes 30 per day. There are people who have multiple transmute alchemists just for this purpose. On my server, life goes for 7g and air for 50.

Most of them seem to come from dungeons and professions.
If you look at the drop lists here on Wowhead, you'll notice that there aren't as many mobs dropping these as we're used to from TBC/Wrath.

I've gotten at least half of mine from skinning, which sometimes drops a bladder like bag that contains one or two of one volatile or another. However, I have noticed that since I've completed the content in the new areas, which involves a bit of phasing, I've gotten considerable fewer bladders since the Cata loremaster achievment. I can't guarantee the connection, but a lot less embersilk cloth also drops.
Fishing in the new areas has been the source of most of the rest of the volitiles I've got. YMMV...
