I was originally going to put this in the Create your Own Lore thread... but it didn't turn out that way because it turned out to be a lot longer than I originally anticipated. This is my 'own' idea of a world wide Cataclysm for WoW. My lore might be broken in places, but I was too lazy to reserach before I typed this except to get names ¬¬ Leave me alone.
---
The war against the Lich King had been about to end. Mortals, of the Horde and the Alliance gathered teams to fight their way toward the fiend that sat upon his frozen throne. How foolish all of us were to think that they would put aside their differences to fight. No, instead, they fought through the Lich King's most powerful forces, but when pitted against him they fell so easily. Tirion Fordring and Darion Mograine died, and so we were forced to retreat, all of us, to the very edges of Northrend.
Conflict in the rest of Azeroth brought our attention away from the battle against the undead. We fled from Northrend to protect our homes, cutting of the means by which to sail across the seas to the frozen wastelands. The Scourge would not follow, not yet, hopefully.
How could we be so ignorant? So grounded in the mindset of fools? I cannot believe that we abandoned everything we had worked so hard to achieve only to find that we had left was crumbling between our fingers. Azeroth was in turmoil, the very foundations of the world were breaking apart and we had been oblivious to it in the biting snowstorms.
The Dragonflights began warring. In the absence of mortals, Wyrmrest Temple was destroyed into nothing more than rubble. Left unchecked, the remains of Malygos's followers resurrected the Lord of Magic and he brought his revenge upon his 'sister'.
Nothing could have prepared anyone for what was about to occur. The Reds fled south with the Blue Dragonflight in pursuit, unknowing to both of those flights that Deathwing and his murderous kin were now leading the Twilight's Hammer across Azeroth. Fury rages across our land as the elements were thrown into rage that not even the combined might of all shaman's could quell. Out of the very sky, the sea, and the ground rose the entryways to the Elemental Plains.
Ysera had been fully consumed by the Nightmare lurking in the Emerald Dream. She acted in blind thinking, lashing out at the world by sending her corrupted children through the portals stationed in Azeroth. Demented like the rest of the Dream, the druids that had been dwelling within it now struck to take Moonglade as their own. The keepers of nature that were not under the Nightmare's influence fled, Lake Elune'ara became a new portal into the Dream.
If that were not the most of our problems, Nozdormu was found to be corrupted by the void. He returned from absence to turn the Bronze Dragonflight into Infinite. The Lord of Time, in a crazed rage, collapsed the Caverns where his kin lived to trap all of them within the sands. They say, that because of the demented Aspect trapped beneath Tanaris, the very desert radiates energies. Those that linger in the dunes begin to see images of the past that do not follow the timeline and disturbing visions of the future.
Malygos fought Alexstrasza, the Queen of Life was no longer thinking straight. She destroyed everything, with reasoning that she would have to destroy that which she governed to save it.
The fury of the dragons and of the elements split Azeroth in half.
The Eastern Kingdoms was separated into two parts when the Thandol Span was completely collapsed from the talons of the red wyrms. Waves from the Abyssal Maw, which consumed the Maelstrom and made sea voyages nearly impossible, caused the two parts of the Eastern Kingdoms to float away from each other.
Kalimdor didn't fare any better. The Thousand Needles became flooded at the start of the chaos, but the impact of the endless water caused it to rip through Feralas and sunk the once grassy-land beneath the ocean. Another continent was split so easily, and suddenly Azeroth turned into five floating landmasses.
Teldrassil remained rooted in the ground, but Deathwing took over the world tree, causing the elves of Darnassus to flee to a destroyed Darkshore and set up a new capital for themselves. Quel'danas was torn asunder, but before the Sunwell was destroyed, Lady Liadrin and Velen, along with Naaru, created three tiny fountains of light across our broken world. The original three remaining portals into the Emerald Dream were destroyed to make way for the new, lesser, Sunwells.
During our turmoil, the Greymane Wall was shattered open, revealing the curse of the worgen that had spread throughout the citizens of Gilneas. They lashed out at the Forsaken that began to intrude upon their lands with the gate now open, so the worgen joined the Alliance. At the same time, the goblins were now taking sides and became members of the Horde.
So stupidly did the forces of Azeroth not learn from their mistakes from the strike against the Lich King, no, once more they decided that this unrelenting destruction would serve as the means to drive their war onward.
Varian Wrynn, the King of Stormwind, seized control of all the Alliance against the will of some of the factions. Velen and Magni Bronzebeard openly opposed Wrynn's decision of war, the dwarves of Ironforge and the Draenei seceded from the Alliance. Gelbin Mekkatorque left Ironforge to take up residence within Stormwind, but not all of the gnomes were keen on the decision to help Varian's war, and many of them left as well. Tyrande made the decision of finally becoming a major part of the 'New Alliance', and openly supported the human king's cause against the orcs and the Horde. Reluctantly, the worgen of Gilneas agreed as well to follow Varian.
On the other side, Warchief Thrall and Saurfang the Elder were forced out of Orgrimmar from an uprising within. Garrosh Hellscream forcefully took the new mantle of leader of the Horde and challenged the current factions to join with him or become wanted outlaws and cowards. Cairne Bloodhoof was assassinated by Magatha Grimtotem, who became the leader of Thunderbluff. Many of the tauren were opposed to Magatha, and left to follow the former Warchief in his strive for peace. Vol'jin mysteriously vanished one day, leaving the Darkspear trolls to decide their own fate. The goblins were offered a high price to stay within Garrosh's Horde, and so they did.
Sylvanas, torn between choosing a side, took neither and destroyed the zeppelin towers connecting the Undercity to the other forces of the Horde. Her apothecaries now work day and night on a new creation. Lor'themar Theron made a pact with Sylvanas, the blood elves and the Forsaken now only working for themselves.
Lady Jaina Proudmoore and mages from the Kirin Tor created a safe haven out of Theramore. There became the meeting place for the races willing to work together, and in Proudmoore's personal tower was signed the Treaty of Harmony. The dwarves of Ironforge; the exiled orcs, taurens, and gnomes; the draenei; and the humans of Theramore became the Rebel Concord.
Our world is nothing like it has ever been before.

Impressive, I like it.
Would make a good start for WoW 2 or Warcraft 4... :P

I blame gameplay for not allowing this change. It would be awesome, though.
