What to do with unwanted runes?

By "unwanted runes" I am referring to what can happen every so often either when the rotation is interrupted or when AoEing, where you get half of a rune pair stuck there. Specifically, I am referring to an Unholy DK in these situations, although I assume it could apply to frost or blood as well.
Situation 1
(Usually while doing trash or soloing) Outbreak is on CD from the last mob, so I have to apply diseases on the next mob with IT and PS. Since our rune pairs are FB, this means I am left with a Blood rune being unused, unless I use it on BB or BS. I generally do that to get the D rune rolling in, but I feel like I'm wasting something here.
Situation 2
This is where it's more pressing for me: AoE DPS leaves me with frost runes just sitting there. The only options I have to burn them is either use FU on DS (which is a waste of the U rune), or use IT, which is just going to give me frost runes back and isn't going to do much damage at all.
This would also help me if I respecced into Blood Tap. Currently I'm using Runic Corruption because it's never wasted on runes that were almost full anyway, and half the death runes I got from Blood Tap were replacing unholy runes, the other half were chopping up my FB runes and leaving me with a ready F rune but no B rune to go with it.

Use Pestilence (glyphed for range) instead of PS/IT. Help yourself with nontaunting death grip if the diseased target is a slowpoke.
What do you have as lvl 15 talent? If roiling blood than use blood boil instead of pestilence, if plague leech than use it (if its on cd on such pull, its wierd and you probably use it wrong), unholy blight will mostlikely be on cd.
And for gods sake use
to get those rune rolling.
