So on my 62 Rogue I've been the popular Mut build, or at least slowly speccing into it, and I've never been anything other than Shs Sub and Combat Swords before the WotLK talent changes. So what do I open with? I was thinking along the lines of Cheap Shot or Garrote.

Whatever you feel that would give you most but and least damage taken.

depends on so many different things, but for leveling it will IMO be cheapshot

But on a clothy open up with a good Ambush that should take their health down to less than half then just simply use a kidney shot or something to hold them still while your mutilate tears them apart wow! what kind of clothies are you fighting? the half nekid kind?
On a warrior I was told by

to open with a garrote get the combo points, Rupture, Vanish, Cheapshot, Kidney shot, and if he is not dead by then you need to shiv on your deadly poisons and keep bleeding him and just kite him around and avoid taking hardcore dmg. i would love to see a AJ guide that uses deadly

A Mutilate lvling spec is all about avoiding taking damage. That means stun lock. On casters tho I like to use garrote for the silence. Before the 3.0 changes the stun lock used to be more important due to the positioning issues. But since assassination doesn't have much along the lines of mitigating damage or taking multiple adds, I'd still go with a stuck lock anyway just for the longevity.

I'll open with Garrote on a mage, but Cheap Shot on a priest. That is of course, unless I'm using Ambush (and am not spec into Mutilate).
