Let me give you all a great piece of advice, no matter what your spec. Agility FTW!!!! Most hunters, especially MM and BM overvalue AP, and undervalue crit. Agility gives you both. Plug it into Cheeky's spreadsheet, you'll see.
/disagree
I stack AP over AGI.
Never have any issues with DPS. Or being out-DPS'd.
Also keep in mind that stacking AP over AGI does 2 things for you:
1) Most things have double or more AP:AGI ratio. Gems for example, seem to follow this rule.
2) The more AP you have, the more AP that goes to your pet, raising your overall DPS even more.
AGI FTW? No.
AP FTW.

...I cannot believe that you fail to realize that while pure AP from an item/gem is usually double AP from agi in an item/gem, AGI GIVES YOU CRIT! 40 agi = 22 crit, 40 agi = 40 AP. Thus, 40 agi = 22 crit + 40 AP (ITS MAGIC!!!!). But in the end, niether is the best hunter stat. As you gain more AP, your crits hit for more. As you gain more crit %, you rely more heavily on your AP to hold your DPS up by means of increasing overall damage, and since crit = 200% damage, your AP impacts a crit double as much as it impacts a normal hit. As 40 agi = 22 crit instead of 20, and you normally have the same amount of agi as crit in an item/gem, agi is in fact more effective in most cases. Also, agi increases AP and crit, relieving you of a lot of worry, since it fulfills both parts of your DPS. gem-wise, I almost always go for agi unless i need a different color gem for meta/socket bonus. I will agree that agility does not improve pet DPS as much as AP, but it generally increases hunter DPS more. Also, untill you have enough crit % to keep your pet gaining as much focus as it uses, it helps this aspect (top DPS seems to be a wind serpent, and its DPS increases a lot for ur crit untill you get 40% crit). From agility, you gain another bonus from kings, since AP is not a stat that kings increases. In 25 mans, you will usually have this buff on you. As previously mentioned, cheeky's spreadsheet on
www.elitistjerks.com
is a very reliable source on hunter DPS. It shows all the conversions it uses, and has a lot of user friendly features, i love it. Anyways, you will probably have a lot of use for crit % untill you hit 30%, when i believe the increase in DPS starts slowing down. Again, this is dependent on your AP. This discussion is pretty useless, however, b/c unless u REALLY dont balance your gear AT ALL, AP and agi are usually about the same in terms of +DPS, and crit slightly less. As it is, WoW generally doesnt allow you to do this, since most of your stats are from armor w/ unchangeable stats. I have around 1700 AP and 28% crit, and agility still is almost the same for me as AP, despite my mass of crit and small AP base. (I prefer it for the sake of the focus regeneration of my pet, wind serpent). In PvP, also, agi and crit are normally superior to AP because they offer unexpected, spiky DPS, rather than steady, predictable DPS, making the job of a healer much more difficult. Yes resilience renders crit less useful in terms of DPS in PvP, but in arenas the game is normally more focused on getting that killing blow in and finishing the guy off instead of taking him down bit by bit; a 3k aimed shot crit can completely change the results of the match. All in all, agi has a difference in the way it adds dps, but it adds just about the same as AP, so in the end its all about preference. As a crit/agi *!@#$, i also have to worry a lot more about pulling aggro, especialyl right after a pull, then a hunter who stacks AP. Feign death makes aggro less of an issue throughout boss fights, but a couple crits and that tanks gonna need 2 taunt the boss to keep me alive at the start of the fight. In terms of PvP, agi also adds to the dodge %, and since warriors seem to be my main problem, that can often help a lot in arenas. A dodged execute, MS, windfury proc, or sword spec proc can save you from death.

You guys look WAY to deep into a game... And besides that, he said he's lvl 26. Grats on everyone who listed lvl 70 items, you fail /facepalm.
And worring about what exact stat set up does more pew pew... and expecting someone, who stated he's new, to understand and then get into an argument over it! /facepalm
ZDoW melee hunter FTW!
For the new guy, when I was a lowbie, I found that dual weilding (main hand and off hand) seemed to have better stats that I was looking for then most of the two handed weapons.
But then again, I was power leveling (trying to beat my old score) so I didn't have much time to look around.
Things to look for is raw stats. Don't worry to much about how much DPS it does, because 80%+ of the time you wont be swinging it.
With the expansion out, there were some new items that showed up in the old lands. And some changes. So if you see an item with +attack power on it, remember that 1 agility = 1 attack power. However agility also gives things like chance to crit, armor, ect.
But don't worry, there really isn't a wrong choice so long as it kind "fits the bill". Just avoid things with +spell damage, +healing, +strength as you'll get little to nothing from these.
And dont stress about gear. I went from 1-60 in 11 /played days (if I didn't mess around doing pointless quests, quests with crap drop rate, and BGs I coulda cut this ALOT) and when I walked into oulands, I was in all blue level 35 or less leather armor that had +agil on it (lol). The only thing I ever upgraded was my ranged weapon, and that's really all you need to do.
(And btw, for the elitests who will say, But if you had, blah blah blah, when my hunter was 43, still in lvl 35 or less blues of leather, I was tanking ZF better and doing more dmg then any tank or DPS class. Gear don't mean jack when your leveling)
So just have fun with your new hunter! It's what it's all about!
