I, like the OP, started by playing Runescape. I really loved it, half of my class played it. The thing I loved most about it, was the quests and, of course, the awesome minigames. I played Pest Control, Castle Wars and others (Can't remember the names). Then one of the friends I played with found World of Warcraft, In the summer of 05-06 (Can't remember, but we jumped in during the first scourge invasion).
Then in June-July 2008, I took a break from WoW, togheter with my friend. I then went on Runescape's website to see if there was anything new in the last 2 years I haden't played (Well, doh). Me and my friend then enjoyed playing it for our month break. So much new stuff. I then quitted RS again, a week or so after the new graphic update.

i only play because my friends play
i will not play if i have no friends to play with
and by "friends" i mean people i mutually care about from outside of warcraft
oh right, because it's fun. it's not fun if i don't have friends to play with

Consoles
: $2-300 +$50 per game.
I'd have to disagree with you on this one, a good computer costs at least $1000 an then WoW+BC costs another $50 and after that you add the monthly fee, It's not cheap.
I think it's worth paying for it though and I play it because it's fun, and it's a truly great feeling to down a new raid boss, and if you don't feel like hard core playing you can just relax in a heroic or whatever. I actually think the fee is a good idea because it makes me feel that I can be sure that they keep developing the game.
A good computer is good for more than just WoW. WoW you can get for free, then pay $15 monthly. Most console video games don't even last a month, and you pay $50-60, or cheaper depending on the game. Expansions have been $40, and if they meet their goal, they will come out annually. I'd probably be spending about $100/mo. on video games if I only bought console games.
