We all know that Wowhead is a great source for items, drop info, maps, and mob locations. However, there are a lot of things that Wowhead can do that most people DON’T know about.
Be sure to explore using the filtering system! You can do this by selecting Browse, and then a subcategory of your choice. Then look for the "Create a Filter" link on the right side.
There are hundreds of ways to use Wowhead’s filters. Here are a few ideas:
You can use a filter that searches the flavor text of all the items in the database. This allows you to do things like get a list of all of the
heroic keys
in the game.
You can search for items that your profession can make, which are used as reagents by other professions. For instance,
this filter
will let you find all the reagents that Alchemists can make—not to mention the average buyout prices, so you know how much to auction them for.
Having trouble finding a filter that shows you the items you’re looking for? Just use the “Effect Text” filter! This allows you to search the effects box of an item by keyword. For instance,
this search
lets you find any item that adds to Feral Combat Skill rating, while
this search
will return all Guardian Elixirs.
Looking to submit some new screenshots? Wowhead has a “screenshots” filter which lets you find which NPCs or items don’t have screenshots yet. If you’re starting a new Undead character, run
this filter
before you level too high—and help “flesh” out our screenshot collection!
There are plenty of other cool tricks Wowhead can do. For instance, searching for “Tin Vein” will bring up
this page
, which shows the location of every tin vein in the game, with coordinates. You can use the same simple functionality to search for any mining node or herbalism node. You can also use it to search for the random spawn points for
treasure chests
.
Anyone else whose found a cool or unique way of using Wowhead, post your ideas here! I bet you can come up with a few that we never thought of. :)

You always have so many good suggestions whenever you implement some new filter option in the Under Development page ... I've been thinking, though.

I think my issue is that I don't think any search I perform is exceptionally tricky.
The way I got my Wowhead title was that Skosiris and either TecnoBrat or Sky were having a discussion about how to create a link to a search page whose results were a specific set of items that could be crafted by drops from some instance. Skosiris indicated that it wasn't possible based on the stock filter options, but I came up with a filter based on some unique text string that all of the items shared. Not an exceptionally tricky hack, but it got the job done.

Yeah, I don't consider anything I do to be really tricky either...
I know discussion is cluttering this thread ... I imagine actual suggestions should be copied to the OP.

This early in the forum's lifespan, I welcome all clutter.

Kind of a tip for Wowhead, for the people that use Firefox, you can install an Addon to put the Wowhead search in the search box at the top of Firefox, meaning you're always 1 click away from searching. I find it very useful as i'm always using Wowhead for quests, boss tactics, recipes mats, etc.

I am searching for a method to do this:
Imagine this search, leather shoulders with >20 healing:
http://www.wowhead.com/?items=4.2&filter=sl=3;cr=50;crs=1;crv=20
How can I sort it by the amount of healing?
why isn't one column per filter automatically added so I can sort?

something I use all the time:
you don't have to write whole names when you're searching, the frist 3 letters are often all you need, for example, say I want to find Merciless Gladiator's Chain Gauntlets, I'll just type "mer gla cha gau", alot faster!

Here is something I do frequently:
When searching for healing gear you often wind up with a lot of +damage and healing gear in the return. Typically, item budget restrictions cause those items to be sub-par for pure healers, so I want to see only gear with just healing. In my filter, in addition to asking for healing > 0, I ask for damage = 0.
Here is an example:
http://www.wowhead.com/?items=4.1&filter=qu=3;minrl=70;maxrl=70;cr=50:51;crs=1:3;crv=0:0

I do the same when looking for healing items, I have to set +damage to zero as well as +healing to greater than zero. Works a treat.
On another note: It would be nice to improve the obtained by drops in selection, at the moment you have to select an instance, zone or raid. It would be nice if I can select world drop, instance drop and raid drop.

Is there a way to show every single uncategorized spell? instead of just showing 200?

I think there should be something to help aid in searching for twink items, there are lots of comments & discussions on twink related items yet it is hard to search for them properly because alot of the 'required level' part of some twink item reward quests are incorrect, for example if you search for all items a 29 hunter can use on wowhead you will infact miss out on the best ranged weapon and some gear, just thank god i searched hard and read alot about twinking before spending serious money (i did however learn alot about twinking from the comments on this site)

+healing only items
If you want to search for +healing only items, you need to set filters like this:
Healing done by spells > X
Damage done by spells = 0
else you will get +dmg/+heal items too.

you can also set up a quick search in firefox by bookmarking
http://www.wowhead.com/?search=%s
going to the properties of that book mark and set up a keyword, such as "wowhead".
now you can search from your address bar just by typing in <keyword> <search string> (in my example "wowhead" <search string>)
I tried this... then tried to search with: wow shield and it sent me to
http://thottbot.com/?i=11613
... weird
