This section of the Restoration Shaman guide explains the best possible choices for the Netherlight Crucible, important traits and relic bonuses, and how to progress through your Restoration Shaman artifact weapon Sharas'dal, Scepter of Tides.
Artifacts in Battle for Azeroth
As of June 26th, completing the quest
The Power in Our Hands
will further empower your Artifact Weapon, enabling all traits and at least
Concordance of the Legionfall
level 75, further increasing in power over time until the Battle for Azeroth pre-expansion patch.
Therefore, only the Netherlight Crucible recommendations are relevant on this guide page leading up to BFA, as you already receive all Artifact Traits by default. This makes content easier to complete, especially some
content going away
such as
Ahead of the Curve
and
Mage Tower Challenges
.
In the
BFA pre-patch
, your Artifact Traits will be removed, and relics will simply increase the item level of your artifact weapon. However, many artifact traits are returning as talents or azerite powers in Battle for Azeroth and we have a compiled a
full list you can read here
.
Moving forward in Battle for Azeroth, you will still be able to acquire the Artifact Weapon which will mainly interest transmog collectors for the appearances. Learn how to unlock all appearances in BFA with our
Artifact Appearance Guide
.
Resto Artifact Weapon:
Sharas'dal, Scepter of Tides
Active Ability
Equipping Sharas'dal, Scepter of Tides grants you the ability
Downpour
, which heals nearby allies for a moderate amount and increases their health for a small period of time.
Netherlight Crucible
The
Netherlight Crucible
is a new system added in Patch 7.3. The Crucible allows you further empower your Artifact Weapon, by specializing and increasing the power from your relics. With it, each relic receives a small talent tree that you can select new traits from, depending how many traits your weapon have. Do not worry, however, because with the changes to
Artifact Knowledge
, unlocking the full power of the Crucible won't take long. Learn everything about this new system in our
Netherlight Crucible Guide
.
The traits unlock as you spend points into
Concordance of the Legionfall
.
The first tier of unlocks happens as you unlock the crucible giving you +5 item level per relic. (total of 15 item levels).
Shadow/Light Traits
The Second tier of unlocks happens at 60,63,66.
The traits unlock randomly but below is a rough priority for which traits to chose if given the choice between them. It is worth noting that as a healer the game will force at least one of your "Shadow" or "Holy" Traits to be a throughput increase, the other however can be a damage trait. With the opening of
Antorus, the Burning Throne
, it is now possible to obtain
Insignia of the Grand Army
, which increases the potency of your Tier 2 Crucible traits by 50%. It might be a really strong legendary if you are lucky with Netherlight Crucible rolls! The following is a relative ranking of the traits for the Resto Shaman Artifact:
Holy:
Refractive Shell
- Good shielding offering extra effective health
Shocklight
- Random proc grows more powerful. Likely more attractive than some of the other options which also are centered around random procs.
Light Speed
- Solid, consistent Haste boost that will offer a healing increase
Secure in the Light
- Healing targets will potentially grant a shield
Infusion of Light
- Similar to above but provides healing instead of a shield
Light's Embrace
- Hard to utilize as a healer and often not powerful enough to make an actual difference in the heavy damage of progression raiding.
Shadow:
Most of the Shadow traits are damage traits as such only two are actual throughput increases. Below you will find those two and the rest should be considered to be roughly a zero HPS gain. (Some have minor heal effects when you deal damage which will proc off of our damaging spells.) but they will not be impactful enough to notice.
Master of Shadows
- Strong stat increase and personal survivability with the bonus avoidance. Priest is often plagued by its lack of personals, so additional damage reduction is very helpful
Murderous Intent
- Random versatility proc added onto the Concordance effect. An actual HPS gain compared to all other options below this.
Chaotic Darkness
- Requires damage to proc a random amount of damage dealt to the enemy.
Shadowbind
- Allows leech-like effect but only procs off of damage.
Torment the Weak
- Light DoT with high uptime.
Dark Sorrows
- Small aoe damage burst that would require a heavy number of targets to yield a noticable effect
Relics
The strongest single traits for the Resto Shaman Artifact, ones that affect the spells we use in most contexts, are
Queen Ascendant
and
Pull of the Sea
. For players focused primarily on dungeon content,
Buffeting Waves
and
Tidal Chains
are also viable options. While
the item level bonus of the relic is more important than which trait it buffs
, here is a list of relics that buff these desirable traits:
Queen Ascendant
relics:
Pact of Vengeful Service
from
Wrath of Azshara
in the
Eye of Azshara
dungeon (Life)

Recommended Build Path - Raiding
While getting prepared for raiding, artifact traits should be filled in along the right side of the artifact tree first, headed towards
Queen's Decree
. Following this path opens up one of the most potent in the tree,
Queen Ascendant
, while strengthening your ability to heal with
Healing Stream Totem
via
Wavecrash
and
Queen's Decree
.
1/1
Grace of the Sea
3/3
Buffeting Waves
3/3
Wavecrash
3/3
Queen Ascendant
1/1
Queen's Decree
The path to the second gold trait,
Cumulative Upkeep
, begins by moving in from the right side that we cleared through first by taking
Caress of the Tidemother
and moving up. While
Cumulative Upkeep
is an incredibly potent trait, it requires going through some less than optimal traits just to get to it. Packing more of a punch into your raid cooldown can greatly increase its potency and raid-saving capability.
3/3
Caress of the Tidemother
1/1
Servant of the Queen
3/3
Floodwaters
1/1
Cumulative Upkeep
Your second to last step is to move up the left side of the artifact from the start point, towards
Tidal Pools
. This arch of the tree strengthens
Riptide
and your stacked group healing by greatly improving
Healing Rain
.
3/3
Tidal Chains
3/3
Pull of the Sea
3/3
Empowered Droplets
Before taking
Tidal Pools
, however, we grab
Sense of Urgency
and
Refreshing Currents
. After that,
Tidal Pools
is your next point. Finally, pick up
Ghost in the Mist
1/1
Sense of Urgency
1/1
Refreshing Currents
1/1
Tidal Pools
3/3
Ghost in the Mist
As a note, the final traits you want to take are
Sense of Urgency
,
Refreshing Currents
,
Tidal Pools
and
Ghost in the Mist
in that order. Most commonly,
Bloodlust
/
Heroism
/
Time Warp
and similar spells/effects are used at the start of encounters when healing is typically not required so
Sense of Urgency
loses some value.
Refreshing Currents
averages out to an additional 2 or 3 casts worth of mana over an entire 6 minute encounter, so is fairly weak overall though certainly appreciated. Finally,
Ghost in the Mist
has very little PvE use as it requires extended time spent using
Ghost Wolf
which effectively silences/pacifies the player because Ghost Wolf is broken when casting.
Patch 7.2
Legion Patch 7.2 provides an expansion to the Artifact Weapon allowing you previous 3/3 Traits to be taken to Rank 4 as well as unlocking several new and powerful traits to enhance your healing.
The new traits are
Echo of the Earthen Ring
,
Tidewalker
,
Pitter-Patter
and
Deep Waters
There are two general routes to take when looking to upgrade your weapon Post-7.2 after obtaining your initial 25 traits. Raiding and Mythic+. Raiding places priority on the new traits as well as making best use of our AoE healing traits while Mythic+ places priority on some existing traits before moving into our shiny new ones.
For Mythic+ Dungeons, your priority will likely be as follows,
This places emphasis on obtaining 4th ranks in
Buffeting Waves
,
Queen Ascendant
,
Tidal Chains
and
Pull of the Sea
before grabbing those juicy new ones as a majority of Mythic+ healing is done by Single Target spells.
For Raiding, your priority will likely be as follows,
This path places great importance on the AoE healing capability and potency of our newest traits
Pitter-Patter
and
Deep Waters
, while picking up impactful traits shortly after like
Wavecrash
that plays nicely with the tier set from Nighthold.
All in all, its important to note that just like our Relics, 1 additional point in any of our throughput increasing traits all perform (on average) about the same. The important ones to pick up are the 4 new ones, after that the rest is tailored to your needs. These are guidelines. Your mileage may vary.
