IMHO, these pieces were no longer worth it after Blizzard updated the loot tables in the level 60 dungeons. Now there are drops from Strat, Scholo, BRS, even BRD that are arguably sidegrades.

At least the Pristine Hide is not soulbound. I feel bad for warriors who have few chest pieces better than the Chromatic Flight BP for pre-MC gear.

Very nice PvP head for mages who can't get their hand on Mish'undare. Beats NW head hands down in PvP. Gotten from a quest in Winterspring, where you need to bring a goblin some expensive reagents ;)

Considering the cost of crafting this head piece, unless you don't have access to PvE raid content, along with the new changes to the way the PvP system works, this is a waste of time and money, which would be better spend trying to get a few more honor points to grab the PvP epic items available at 60.

this piece is way too expensive to obtain. a couple weeks in mc and you can get the tier1 helm which is arguably only a little downgrade. if you can get into ony, then why bother?

The extra crit chance is awesome, for PvE or PvP. The extra burst damage for bosses, Rag in MC for instance, is great and will really help guilds to get him down for the first time. The more crits = the more dps. Sure, many other head pieces can be gotten easier, but if you aren't currently in an MC equipped guild, then go ahead and take the time to get the mats. Hopefully your guildies will be as helpful as mine were with the more expensive stuff.

Ok, everyone that keeps say "The tier 2 head is so much better" or "hey get the hat that drops in BWL", do you realize why this was put in the game? It's for people that can't get that stuff. I for one will not see the inside of BWL until lvl 70, past RG anyway.

This hat is nice, but yeah there are better out there. this wasn't put in for the people in heist or the sundering. it was for people like me.

I'm a holy/disc priest, and the last I recalled, priests' spells crit as well. Just keep that priest around for future raids. You'll be benefitting from the crit heals and not having to worry about another priest rolling for a "caster hat" hide.

Im farming like an animal for the hide now, and here is my experiences.

The scarletthreads, you can pick up in 1 go if no one else in your group wants them, because they spawned in 5 different places, and I hoped for the nice spellcrit mantles that balnazzar dropped too. strat scarlet takes a while though, 2hours+.

The stitchings took me about 5-6 strat runs, but that was cool, cause I needed a wand and items for disenchantment. a stratrun usually dont take more than an hour anyways.

The pristine hide of the beast is what takes time.
I've been doing 50+ random ubrs raids and lost finkles skinner 6-7 times. Though the hide isnt the only reason I do ubrs, I need brilliant chromatic scales for my cloak and the ring of rumination from rend.

As a mage I really want this cap, since its the best headpiece in game for a critmage (me) and really kicks ass in pvp.

And to the poster above, ubrs doesnt take 2 hours, with a good group you can be finished with drakki in 50mins (yeah, i've even managed that with a random group)

time to rend is 15-20 mins, and the beast, 10 mins more, tops.

And btw, its summervacation so its long between the mc runs for our guild right now.
so farming ubrs is by no means a waste of time, though I have started grinding money instead to buy the hide, I've seen it at AH for 400g, which is a fairly good price.

Damage stats Crimson Felt Hat vs Cap of the Scarlet Savant
Assumes you have 200% dmg on crit and spell is full cast (not instant) for simplicity

Over 100 spells doing 800 damage each the Cap of the Scarlet Savant will grant 1760 additional damage (2.2 * 800)
Over 100 spells doing 800 damage the Crimson Felt Hat grants an additional 3000 damage (30 * 100)

+dmg gear also has the benefit of spreading the damage evenly rather then having spikes which is better for aggro management and predictability.

I just got this cap, cost me about 1.1k gold and it is without any doubt worth it. I had been grinding UBRS every day the past month and i didn't even see the hide drop once.
So i made a promise to myself to get it from AH the next time it popped up, no matter what the price.

I am a crit specced frost mage (Carrion of Dunemaul EU) and this was the only thing except the Ironbark staff that i needed that isn't from a 40-man instance/world boss.
I only get outdamaged by some verry hardcore rogues if i go all out now and i love it!

Too bad the Graphics for the cap really suck :S

If u do some math on it, u will find out that � crit and � dmggear = most dmg.

I have this cap with 100hp enchant
and Netherwind crown with ZG enchant (18spellpower and 1 hit)

for PVE mc/ony/bwl i use frostbolts 99% of the time, therefor i use dmg gear

44spellpower = 35 more with frosbolt becuz of cast time
my frostbolt = 820 dmg
2% crit = 0,02*820 = 16,4 more.

even with same enchant netherwind would still own this in pve.

1 other thing is that crit gives u more aggro, bad bad bad in bwl.

But for PvP
I use instant spells alot
fx cone of coldt
550base-dmg and 1100 crit

44 spellpower would give like 6 more dmg with cone of cold, becuz its instant
2% crit = 550*0,02 = 11dmg.

PVP
Sta>crit>dmg>int>spi
PVE
dmg>int>sta>spi(sta and spi depends a bit on what instances)

nice post, but you are talking about frost
most of PvP mages are Arc/Fire, at least on my realm, as i heard Pyaroblast will get 100% dmg, as you get for Fireball, etc..
my point is, in PvP you only need sta and +crit since you use Arcane Power and you want most crits as possible in that period.
this cape owns, 2% is huge, so take it this way,
Cape 2%, Robe of the Archmage 1%, Gloves of Spell Mastery 2%, Ironbark Staff 2%, Eye of Beast 2%, cant remember those bracers from kazzak 1%, Dragonslayer's Signet 1% and ofc some nice neckless with 1%, totaly 13%... thats nice and you can get even more
about dmg, ring of spell power is 33, get talisman or charm from MC/ZG, or even boath, i also like PvP set, 1st set bonus for 2 of set is +23dmg for mage, so get boots and pants
Only problem is you HP, but it can be fixed, get 100HP on chest and 2 librams of constitution on head/legs and thats 300HP allready. i think mana shouldnt be problem since you take arcane mind talent, which increases your total mana by 8% and if you are gnome aditional 5%

I think this hat is awesome for a balance druid. I would defininatley get this on mine, since w/ the talent tree, u already have 5% crit, moonkin is +3%, then intellect adds maybe like 10-15%, and any items that add to crit = more wrath-spamming goodness!

I got all the mats i need except 2x scarlet thread.. so itll take like 1 strat scarlet. the rest of the mats is pretty easily grinded.

in total ill have used around 100g to make that cap. i think its fair ^^

To get this cap you must first:

1. Kill The Beast in UBRS. An NPC will appear and give you a quest to travel to Winterspring.

2. In Winterspring you turn in and get to look in a book which offers you 3 quests. One of them is for this cap (the other are two leather items, one for rogues, one for druids).

3. Now you need to collect the required items.

5 Frayed Abomination Stichings from Stratholme, the abomninations before Baron drops these about 3-5 every run.

8 Arcane crystals. These are rare drops from Rich Thorium Veins. If you are not a miner you need to get them from AH or have a miner friend willing to donate.

5 Enchanted Scarlet Threads. These are looted from various places inside the Scarlet Bastion in Stratholme. There is only one present at the time, each time one is looted another spawns. There will spawn four on each instance reset, ie you need to go back a 2nd time to get the fifth (given you're the only one who needs one). See the relevant thottbot article on the scarlet threads for where to find them.

And the big one...

Pristine Hide of the Beast

There are two ways to get this:

AH (hundreds of gold, maybe over 1k, depending on server).

Have 300 in skinning (or a party member who does) and go kill The Beast in UBRS. You need 315 in skinning to skin him, which means having Finkle's Skinner (drops from The Beast as well) for +10 and the +5 skinning enchant. There is a drop in ZG that gives +10 skinning as well. When you skin the beast you can get the hide. The droprate is very low, so prepare to get very frustrated if you don't have enough cash to get it from AH.

Note that all items can be aquired without having the quest. You can gather all you need, and then go to Winterspring (or UBRS if you haven't killed The Beast yet).

Ive had this cap for a while (probabaly 4-5 months) i believe they increased the drop rate of abomination stiches and chance to for there to be a scarlet thread spawn...when i did the quest it took me 10 runs or so of both undead and scarlet strat to get the required mats...now when i occasionally go to strat i see multiple stiches and threads everytime....also this hat does make the decision of wether or not to get a netherwind crown pretty difficult =P

The great thing about going after the cap is the rep gained while farming. After the many Baron and Strat runs I was revered with the Argent Dawn. This helped me attune to Naxx a whole lot faster. The cap is worth it. I had been looking for something to replace that old Eye of Flame with for a looong time.

my mage is lvl 51 and i had some money from my last char so i bought the
hide(650g)
8 arcane crystals(20g each)
just one ubrs run and some strat runs and there i have it.
This is definatly worth it as i would like the crit as fire mage and some nice stam/intell, its great.

One UBRS run: Pristine Hide of the Beast and Magister's Robe
Second UBRS run that day: Shadowblade, sell it for 200g

Made the cap about two days later after finishing getting the scarlet threads.

How to get this item:
Step 1: Kill the beast in UBRS.
Step 2: Skin the beast/wait for someone else to skin it.
Step 3: Talk to the NPC that now appears where the beast's corpse was.
Step 4: Do the delivery quest to Winterspring that the NPC gives you (after you finish your UBRS run of course).
Step 5: Talk to the NPC in everlook that you're delivering the quest item to.
Step 6: Look at his catalogue of items he can make for you.
Step 7: Select Cap of the Scarlet Savant.
Step 8: Gather materials. (good luck with that, read other posts below for where to acquire them).
Step 9: Return to the dude who had the catalogue in Everlook with the materials and 50 gold.
Step 10: Frolic.

If you think you are going to get this cap, think again.

The main ingredient is a Pristine Hide of the Beast.

A pristine Hide of the beast has something like 0.1% chance that it can be lvl 300 skinned off of a 15 man raidable boss, The Beast in UBRS. Alot claim 0.01% chance, but I doubt blizzard would be that cruel, 0.1% chance is evil enough.

So calculate the low chance of this being skinned with the fact that you will be rolling against 15 other people, and you can pretty much catagorize this quest as "Not in your lifetime."

Blizzard just made this quest to make you drool.

Well, I won a Pristine Hide of the Beast for FREE when i was lvl 19(first character ever-got the game 9 days ago.) Sold it for 1000g, hooked some of my friends up, and now i'm sittin pretty till i get my mount in 19 more levels

You get the quest from the Malyfous's Catalogue in Everlook. Find the book next to Malyfous Darkhammer.

No, you can get more than one thread per Scarlet Side Strat run. There are 3 rare spawns of where the thread can be. Look up Enchanted Scarlet Thread on this site and someone has already posted where. The most threads I have ever gotten on a run is 2.

I could be mistaken if there were changes in patch 1.6, but I doubt that.

To start this chain you need to kill The Beast in Upper Blackrock Spire and talk to Finkle Einhorn (a gnome in the belly of the beast, who does not always pop out) -- he will give you a quest to talk to Malyfous Darkhammer in Winterspring, who will then let you look at his catalogue, allowing you to get the quest. Click the catalogue to get the quest.

Components
Note: From what I understand, it is best to keep the quest in your log while seeking to find these components (specifically the thread and stitchings). Apparently unless someone in an instance has the quest, the thread won't spawn at all? Unsure about the stitchings. Better safe than sorry, and at 60 you should have ample room in your log.

The easiest part.

1 Pristine Hide of the Beast
This is a rare drop from skinning The Beast.. You need 310 skinning to skin it -- thus, you must have 300 skinning as well as another rare drop -- Finkle's Skinner -- https://www.wowhead.com/classic/search?q=a.cgi?i=18885 -- to skin it all. It is tradeable, however.

5 Frayed Abomination Stitching
These are rare drops off of Abominations in Stratholme.

8 Arcane Crystal
These are rare drops off of Rich Thorium Nodes.

5 Enchanted Scarlet Thread
These spawn -- not drop -- on the Scarlet side of Stratholme. They look like little spools of thread. There's a chance for them to spawn in the Zealous Paladin's Room (both on the desk and in the box with books), on a bench on the right side in the hallway directly opposite the Zealous Paladin's Room, in the Archivist's Room and after you kill Balnazzar they can sometimes respawn. (Anyone know any other spawn points?)

Anyone know where this drops? I'm actually going to assume it's a quest because of no minimum level listed but any help would be much appreciated. I'm assuming I'll have to be about 14 levels higher to even think about it but whatever :-p

If you buy the tradable parts, you're looking at 1300 gold and 25+ Strat runs.

If you have a guild devoted to getting you the parts, you'll need 300g, 50+ UBRS runs, 5+ Strat runs, and 5+ hours of farming Thorium veins.
