This is possibly the best staff between 10 - 19. Any Mage/Warlock/Priest twinks really need to get this item. It drops of Captain Greenskin, who is the second last boss in the Deadmines. It's not hard to get; after a few runs your bound to have at least one drop.

One problem about this staff (for non-twinks, at least) is that you shortly afterwards receive The Staff of Westfall from killing Vancleef and turnning in a quest. You will then have to choose between spirit and intellect, the first being more important for healers.
You don't need to be twinked to have this great item, possibly your first blue.

If you aren't lucky enough to grab this staff, don't worry. Run BFD and you will get Rod of the Sleepwalker. Both staves are great, but the one quickly follows this.

Great staff for low level casters of any class can be used for many levels as is well balanced. Easily obtained with a group and will be used till higher level 25-30+ staves are available

I've always thought Crescent staff is a bit better than this. It is a quest reward for killing all the bosses in Wailing Caverns.

For Horde, don't waste your time coming to Westfall to snag this weapon, but if you're Alliance, it's definitely the obvious choice over the Staff of Westfall, whether it be for twinking or leveling.

There's a reason why I call the alternative the "Staff of %^&*!@fall", this is it. Do yourself a favour, Alliance casters, run VC as many times as needed.

The Emberstone was a great item.

This staff served me faithfully almost from level 18 all the way up to my current level, 34. It proved to be great for me (a priest) and I never had great reason to go get anything else...

To all level-18 VC-age casters: pick this one up. You'll be using it for a long time :)

...But not forever. If you do get the chance, pick up the Rod of the Sleepwalker in BFD and then, once you hit 34, head up to Scarlet Monastery and pick up the Illusionary Rod (a-f*cking-mazing for casters)

<Also pick up the Hydrocane from Gnomeregan... not as good as this, but its equip effect is invaluable (underwater breathing)>

As druid I was getting really bored on my 2nd healing run on Deadmines. I was annoyed at losing all the rolls and having the DPSers picking up all the white loot.

Then I got this drop AND Smites Mighty Hammer. Sweet! A great combo for druids. That made my day :)

got it first try in deadmines at lvl 19. second time in there I got the minor beastslaying enchant. As the red stone is already bright in dark conditions the glowing red cloud around it is awesome. Stats are great and will last a while. If you are a caster you must aim for this staff,it's worth it.

It dropped the second time for me in the deadmines and I won the roll against another mage and a priest. This staff is better for a mage then the staff of westfall (the quest reward for killing vancleef).

All mages should definately try to get this one. And it looks amazing with a +2 beastslaying enchant on it, the crystal in the staff is red and seems to light up with the enchant.

if ur a druid or priest that wants a healing staff than don't go for this. go for https://www.wowhead.com/classic/item=8186/dire-wand its same damage, has less stamina and intellect though. but it has

Equip: Increases healing done by spells and effects by up to 24.

so if you get an good enchant it it i'd say its better. im currently using the staff of the blessed seer(link up there) on my 18 druid and it rocks especially with my enchant and in WSG.

Just consider it, btw i got it from a guildie and the low drop rate from the mob is worth it!

It seems so simple it is almost silly.

Grab the boat from Ratchet to Booty Bay. Jump in the water and swim to Westfall.
Come on land, bypass the Defias nasties. Be sure there are atleast two of you, summon the rest of your group via meeting stone to the right of the hut that leads to the instance.

Run in and keep moving as fast as you can.When you reach the last few turns just all out run, jump down and there you are.

Doesn't seem so complicated really.
Yes, it's a helluva far to run, but not so far or dangerous as Alliance has to run to get to Wailing Caverns for instance (though we have the E-Z mode way of running through Ashenvale...given that no one ganks you along the way.)

We did repeated runs of DM like this. We had two druids that swam ahead, summoned everyone and then we just ran in and did our thing.

I think this staff is awesome it gives good int. and spirit also 50 health! (5 stamina) good damage i got this when i was lvl 17 warlock a high lvl friend helped and to this day i still use it until i find something better =]

It is just my druid's luck that 5 runs and 3 levels this staff won't drop. Went there since level 17 so now I'm using the blue staff from BFD (Sleepwalker). I do prefer this staff because of +stam for PVP. Yet have to go DM again until I get this for 20s WSG.

The Emberstone Staff is great; no doubt. I preferred it over the quest reward Staff of Westfall for my druid when she was low level.

However, for Shadow Priests and Warlocks, there is a better staff. It had 8 int, and no other stats, but it *does* increase Shadow Damage, and it's only level 17 -- Witching Stave -- it's a BoE, so you can farm for it in SFK and Silverpine Forest, or buy it in the AH.

It is a World Drop in these two areas (SFK and Silverpine) - and well worth getting to increase your shadow damage. I ended up DEing my Emberstone and the Quest Reward Staff of Westfall and going with the Witching Staff until I hit level 24 when I went with the Rod of the Sleepwalker, found in Blackfathom Deeps (BFD)for more int and spirit.

The Rod drops from Twilight Lord Kelris and according to Allakhazam is his most frequent drop at 45.75% -- other than the head which drops for the quest to kill him -- grab the quest is you're coming there, two are given by the Argent Dawn folks in Darnassus, one in Auberdine, and one in IF -- here is the Quest list for that zone. Note that there is a Warlock specific quest, and what appears to be a fifth Alliance quest is a follow up from one of the AD quests, In Search of Thaelrid which leads to Blackfathom Villainy and is the quest to get Lord Kelris' Head.

Interestingly (and a royal pain, lol), I had to run this SEVEN times to get my Rod of the Sleepwalker - I kept getting those Gaze Dreamer Pants which are a green drop, not that great, and are supposed to drop less often, 31.93% of the time, as opposed to the Superior (blue) Rod of the Sleepwalker I was after, which should drop far more often. Bad luck -- BFD is fine, but running it 7 times isn't great fun ;)

Finally I got the Rod, and also a nice bonus, Leech Pants, which dropped from Aku'mai-- his most frequent blue drop. He also drops the really nice Moss Cinch nearly as often, a great item for druids, with +11 int, and +5 stamina -- I remember getting this belt on my druid a long time ago and being very happy with it.

imo, better than westfall, if only for looks. Alternative to this would be Rod of the Sleepwalker, found in blackfathom depths. I actually switched Emberstone for Sleepwalker, only because on the added int.

I got the Emberstone staff at about level 20 when i used to run the Deadmines just to get cash and Exp off the bosses and elites, i only got one of the emberstones and staff of westfall, i saw alot of higher level players back then that used the Emberstone and i dont think i saw one that used the staff of westfall, so i opted for the emberstone and still use it now, and i am level 31 now :D i dont melee that much tho, if i do, i do little to no damage with it because of the lack of strength and i prefer the use of VW and my wand, the Gravestone Scepter and my DoT's so the Int is better for my style of battling, it all depends on what style you like to play whether u are more suited to the Westfall or Emberstone

I had this, the jeweled ring, the brotherhood cape, Cookie's wand, and Magefist Gloves drop for me on my first run, and I am a level 13 Warlock that got rushed through

Icicle Rod
Icicle Rod got this staff when I was like 20 or so with a VERY easy quest for that level at Menethil Harbour (which somehow does'nt exist in the list of quests by zones :/), and I still use it at level 28. Right, It doesn't add as much stats as this Emberstone or the Westfall Staff, but hey, It adds ICE SPELL DAMAGE, and it has a higher damage for a critical because it's slow and has bigger damage range.

How come every staff I find as reward is hardlly a match for this simple Icicle You can easily get without going through a whole instance and or doing an elaborate quest to get it?
Even the Staff of Soran'ruk has great stats but
Staff of Soran'ruk lower damage! and it's only for warlocs and done at a much higher level instance

Crescent Staff Intellect, +7 Spirit, +7 Stamina, with around 20 dps

Strange noone has mentioned this, a very easy staff to get, with a bit better stats. Gotten by doing Leaders of the Fang Only for horde, and it looks a bit silly, but much easier for us to obtain.

So, my lvl 40 warrior friend takes my priest to DM, and we take 3 more lower leveled warriors. So i pass on everything till this boss (Captain Greenskin) and i get the staff the first time i enter DM! So i make 'em go kill the smaller boss (Cookie) and he drops this wand Cookie's Stirring Rod I was pshyched how lucky i am. Now i only need the Lavishly Jeweled Ring and Corsairs Overshirt.

I'm using this weapon on my 18 Staves Warrior. Yeah, "there's no specialization for it" and all that. But the idea is novel and actually quite powerful if you make an effort to use the best staves avaiable.

Caster stats, sure. But 5 stamina ins't too bad. And with a fair enchant, this weapon can really shine in PvP. I've bashed my fair share of blood elf skulls with it.

All Level 34 Mages/Int Classes and above go lookup on the Scarlet Monastery item Illusionary Rod, got it on my first run. Better in all aspects to Emberstone Staff.

I actually prefer this staff to the staff of westfall for my priest. The stats overall I feel are better.

Think of it as trading 3 intellect for 6 spirit (I'd say 3 for 5 would be a fair tradeoff), with 5 stamina thrown in as the kicker.

More mana, more life, while mana and life don't regen during combat anyways.

You end up doing .8 less damage per second (oh well, I still get a few whacks in anyways), but most casters don't melee much. Oh, and the westfall staff sells for 5.5 more silver than this one ;)

I just got it for my Undead Warlock. Its a pretty nice staff,

Ill be using daggers later on in the game when my warlock is higher, but I love the Intellect from it and Stamina is great also.

i got this staff off Cookie in the deadmines and used it over the staff of westfall, i think they are about the same...but i used this one because it looks cooler and its a little but more rare, anyone can get the staff of westfall!

i got the staff doing the vc quest (i forget what it's called :/), but Captain Greenskin (lvl 20 elite i think)usually drops it, not Van Cleef himself. I prefer this staff over the staff of westfall just like i prefer blackened defias armor over the tunic of westfall :D

The Staff of Westfall is much better in my opinion... the killer spirit it gives is fantastic for the caster who tends to solo or grind to level, and even better is the Rod of the Sleepwalker, only a few levels up. Get the Staff of Westfall, then Rod of the Sleepwalker, then Illusionary Rod. My advice.

This staff is WAY better than the Staff of Westfall. I'm sorry, but 6 spirit isn't gonna do that much for you in terms of regen . Emberstone Staff is much better for a caster this level: Stamina, Intellect(!), Spirit: Hax in a bag!

a group of friends and i ran through deadmines because we were trying to do vc. our night elf healer was doing an amazing job at healing (hardly anyone died) our lvl 21 warrior/tank was dealing a ton of damage, a lvl 17 mage was doing more damage thought possible,our lvl 24 warlock was haveing fun owning with rain of fire, leveled to lvl 25, (lol that was the only spell he would use), and my lvl 18 mage was shooting spells like crazy saveing many of the players lives. the group only died once in the eniter part until we got to the very end.thats where we got owned. after we had defeated greenskin, \he dropped this staff. everyone selected greed except the preist and me. i begged and begged for them to let me have and the mage won it... -.- then we tried to kill vc.. we were doing fine then our tank messed up and died. we all were killed cause our priest lagged and couldn't heal himself. by this time it was 1:00 in the morning where i live. i was really mad. it looked so cool! if u would like to help with vc plz add iceysilver to ur friends list thank you!

emberstone staff is a very good staff for its level. drops off the goblin captain who's at the top of the ship and wanders a bit. for my priest it never dropped, but yet on my lock it dropped first kill. got cookie's wand first kill too, hehe.

If like me you are a level 20 and you have both the Staff of Westfall and Emberstone Staff then you have a tough choice indeed. Need more mana regen? Need more Int? Healing the priority? Thinking about PvP? Levelling so need more mana or what? So.... I carry both around with me, sigh.
