The original idea for the Great Vault presented at Blizzcon where you still had coins and you could use them to target loot from specific bosses/dungeons for the Great Vault was great. Sadly it never came to be. I would love to know if it was because of programming limitations or because they wanted to keep the RNG higher.
Or...you know, do away with loot lottery and let people run content for the loot they want? RIng X comes from Dungeon A. How bout just letting me run Dungeon A for Ring X, and when I get it, to feel good about myself and my character's progress so I can move on for trying for Head Piece L? I know, I know, it's a shock I tell you. Letting people do predictive content for predictive gear drops and steadily progress their character through gameplay instead of randomized BS systems? Won't happen, random keeps you forced subscribed just in case that next drop next week is good, predictive content only keeps you WANTING to play the game.
Honestly, how can people say that the vault is an improvement wrt to the bfa weekly chest? Yeah, in theory it's better, you got more items to pick from and more reward for your efforts. In practice though... In bfa I just needed to do a +15 and some pvp to get dissapointed, now I need to kill 9 raid bosses, do 10 m+ and a lot of pvp just to get 9 dupes. And on top of that, a huge downside to the vault, to get my BiS weapon/trinket from m+ the odds are way against me. Either bring back any form of loot targetting (gear vendors, but not as poorly implemented as the valor upgrade system), or skip this weekly "reward" system altogether.Edit: Nothing against Russ Petersen, I'm sure he's a great guy and developer. And I wish him the best in his future career!
I don't wanna trashtalk the guy, I really do hope the next lead rewards designer will try to approach rewards from today's perspective. If this guy was pushing to make the rewards less RNG by the implementation of great vault and the uppers told him to strictly keep the RNG there, then GJ, but nobody likes getting random gear anymore. I really do hope the game will move towards more cosmetic rewards compared to just gear. I am not excited about numbers relevant only for one patch. Cosmetic rewards with less RNG, like meta achievements but not like Mechagon where there was one item that had like 0.5% drop chance to complete meta achiev.
Loot has been a random crap fest since Legion. We shine that expansion over but it created a lot of things that BfA content wasn’t good enough to cover. Don’t wish him ill will, but very little of what he added was what I enjoyed, usually was a source of frustration.
hopefully he lands at a mobile game developer where his ideas may be better received by the customer
Azerite armor was not good, even during late BfA.The Heart of Azeroth Essences, on the other hand, were pretty cool, though the Balancing Team really let the ball drop on them (but take that with a grain of salt, as I got Phenomenal Cosmic Power).Warfront and Islands were undercooked features that needed better tunning (like being more easilly available or having better rewards for PvP mode etc.).
So he's done some good and some bad. I would say neutral feelings, but is all of that his own ideas? Or what the team came up with and polished them down to what we see? Toy tab and great vault is good, but heart of Azeroth is a huge blah feeling to me. So much wasted time in that, and it didn't' feel rewarding when it felt necessary to carry others who have bad RNG relating to the system.
For the record, this guy didn’t kill WoW, but none of his listed curriculum vitae looks appealing to me. That’s all I’m saying.
Many ppl praise the vault here, but don't think about the fact that in BFA you could open TWO chests for 2 items. Anyone doing both pve & pvp it's a downgrade numbers wise. And as a rogue it's extra painful. I have around 30 kills on Sylv, NO DAGGER. IN SIX MONTHS! (I missed a few raid due to work). And even if I'm not a CE raider, just casually progressing in mythic, that $%^& dagger would be still an upgrade because I still only have 1 252 dagger. So, no, @#$ that. The loot's been bad for me for so long, it's depressing but I also don't want to reroll from rogue, I've been maining it since Cata and I otherwiese love it.
Tox Box was good. The rest was bad.
