Summary of Findings

White Base Items can have a socket on them in Patch 9.1, but these sockets have no impact on anything. An unsocketed Base Item is functionally equal to a socketed Base Item at the Runecarver.
Base Items crafted before the Patch will not have a socket.

Newly crafted Base Items will automatically be crafted with a socket.

Brand newregardless if your base item had a socket or notUpgradingregardless if your base item had a socket or not

Blizzard

Newly created Helm, Neck, Bracer, Belt and Ring Runecarving armor pieces will now always be created with a socket.

Recraft the Legendary for a free socket in Patch 9.1 if you have an excess of Soul Ash, and no Stygia.

A lot of 9.0 patterns aren't going to be valuable, but took significant cost to get to R4, and players are going to be buying a lot of rings, necks, backs (of which JC leggos are always pricey). Almost think I am going to double gather on everyone and just sell everything. Now, from my understanding, Domination 'gems' require a Domination Socket specifically, and so gear will still have to be re-crafted in another slot. Further, the socket does not appear when you upgrade existing gear, and so the problem of having to re-craft gear is completely untouched.
I don't know what this is supposed to accomplish, aside from adding another minor incentive to re-craft, but I suppose for anyone crafting a new legendary next week, the extra 16 versatility will be nice...Comment by KondeyFor once I am glad I did not do anything, because I am lazy.
