Just come back and check time to time to realize how wow developers became incompetent.Just putting talents to weapon (Legion), then to the armor (now), then this system. Just variate with talents, but the entire thing is tired. Soulless.
Welcome to MMOs. It's the same content recycled over and over with a different sweater on. Doesn't make Blizzard incompetent, it's just the genre.

Soulbinds won't fix the fact that Venthyr's signature ability is overpowered and players will feel punished by choosing their favourite covenant over it.An unhealthy "Venthyr only" requirement will certainly crop up, because teleportation is way too powerful in so much content.Soulbinds are actually further imbalancing Venthyr, with free transmog and an 8 minute cheat death, the two most attractive soulbind abilities, plus the ability to make the teleport instant, coming from the same Venthyr soulbind. Please, listen to feedback and change things before they are set in stone. Don't punish players for choosing their favourite covenant.

At your comfort level of playing the game, I wouldn't expect anyone to choose a covenant based on performance. Where it really starts to matter is in mythic raiding or high M+. There are still a LOT of guilds that don't clear mythic raids and, often times, that's how guilds break up/lose members. As an officer in a currently 10/12M Nya'lotha guild, I can tell you that this many weeks into clearing up to this point and still progressing, we aren't going to waste time with someone playing a sub-optimal spec or build. We want CE and we are doing what we have the power to do in order to make that happen. If 2 rogues apply and one is playing something considerably worse than the other, we'll take his counterpart. After reading that, it may sound as if I'm not a fan of semi-permanent covenant selection. On the contrary, I AM for it. I may be in the minority, but I miss the old days when you couldn't just change your spec willy-nilly and you had to live with your decisions or pay a ridiculous cost in order to change it. There was a "best" spec and talent tree for each class and that's what you played. I miss those days. I didn't feel the need to optimize for each and every fight, dungeon, raid, farm different sets of gear, carry tomes, use different pots based on single/multi-target and all this.As it sits, my warlock has a slightly different corruption set for almost every boss in Nya'lotha as well as a different set for PvP and M+, some sets for multiple specs. It's insane. I use Outfitter to manage all the different gear/talent/corruption sets and it's over 19 different outfits. It's absolutely abysmal. I wish I could just set it and forget it. Player agency in how a class plays is something I would abolish. Make a class be what it is. If you don't enjoy playing it, play something else.
Nobody is forcing you, you force yourself to that set stuff, talentstuff etc. You yourself set that ruleset for yourself in the game. nobody is stopping you from just not doing it.
