I think I'm going to play the devil's advocate here, since I have a history similiar to The Onyx'. I started out intending to go Alliance with friends but back in those days we were all very "twitchy" about what we wanted to play - and no wonder, since most of us either had no or only a few days played in the vanilla beta. I did end up playing horde as my "final first main", and was exclusively Horde without any alliance alts beyond level 20 or so until about a year and a half back.I created a second account on the server I played my horde chars, after realising that I quite liked Alliance and what had been holding me back from making proper Alliance alts was that I couldn't bear the thought of playing anywhere else. Knowing a lot of Alliance people through irc / vent, etc sure helped the decision too. The Alliance paladin in my signature is my main these days, but I did play Silverblood to 80 and the Horde paladin to 77 during beta, so I've seen that side too.I'm almost exclusively talking about environments and visuals, for the record.
I play for the Alliance. I've rolled a couple of Horde toons, but they've never lasted very long for a number of reasons:A. I've already got alts of all the classes I want to play. The last thing I want to do is go through the levelling ANOTHER character of the same class. B: I like the Alliance areas more. I like the order of Stormwind, the peace of Ellwyn (when outside of Pornshire, anyway), the claustrophobic Ironforge, the seclusion of Teldrassil, and the haunting beauty of Darkshore and Duskwood (still my two favorite zones in the game). I've rolled one of every Horde race, and to me, none of the starter/beginning areas can hold a candle to what the Alliance has. All the Horde has is desert after wasteland after barren plains after wasteland. C: Since there's a 10char max per server, and I'm a confirmed altaholic in a GREAT guild, character space is limited. Each race spends the first 20-30 levels in their own zones, doing their own unique things, and one day I might roll a Horde character to see all of that, but after you hit that 30-mark, you're doing the same quests as characters of the other faction in all the same zones. I've run through the Plaguelands more times than I'd care to count...the last thing I wanna do is do with with ANOTHER character who's going to end up being cut off from the little financial empire I've got going amongst all my alts as well as the great social aspect of my guild. Maybe if there was some potential for cross-faction communication in the endgame (since the Horde and Alliance ARE technically teaming up to tackle the Legion and Arthas and all...), I'd be more willing to go through with it.
Personally, I started out as a Hordie. I did eventually later try out the Alliance side and even later down that line came to the conclusion that I prefer the Horde to a extent. When I was playing Horde I was just casually levelling alts, nothing too serious. But being as big nerd as I am the second I found out Role-Playing servers existed I was addicted. I'd like to add to that note that not ALL Alliance players are dim-witted children who couldn't have an intellectual discussion if they were possesed by Einsteins god-damned ghost. But the majority of them do tend to flock towards the Alliance and thus brand the faction in general with a bad name. I have met very nice people in the Horde and Alliance both.To sum up what I'm trying to say between the inconsistent rambling, I prefer Horder vastly for casual playing but for Role-Play I must agree on Malagaynes note that it allows you a much higher level of freedom by playing Alliance.
horde has better races.alliance has better towns.you can make it wordier if you want or add in more things of little importance. but for me it has always been like that. so horde for me, because when i fight, i dont do so in towns.
