For an MMO, I almost always start out with some kind of healer. For a solo RPG, it's almost always a melee warrior.
Front of the line, two-hand toting, mead-swilling barbarian types. Cause if you can't cut it in half with one swing, you aren't trying hard enough.
I usually go for the ranged hunter type. I like to deal some damage without being in the thick of things.
I usually play Ranged Physical dps. Hunter/Ranger/Archer

Ranged DPS, either Hunter/Ranger type or Mage type
I used to play casters because I like the idea of killing monsters before they get to you, but then I relized if it does get to you then your screwed. So lately I have been playing mele classes because they can take a LOT more hits and are just fun to play!
I generally play a Paladin. I like being the holy defender of the weak and the dispenser of justice to evil.
I tend to play mage-classes, and my current character is wielding a scythe. Slice-and-dice :D
Rogue or ranged/sniper type, whenever possible!
I've always had a love for druids and rangers in D&D. so generally play those. Main in WoW is a druid healer/tank. love it tremendously
I like to experiment, taking the class that seems most unlike anything I have seen before.
I the RPG world I always prefer to be a caster since I think they are the best dealing damage. I'm in the most cases a lone wolf so I love to deal massive pain to the enemy instead of taking salomonic actions. The tank role could be nice when I want to deal melee damage but could be a little disorganized, but its ok =oD.
I tend to switch from class to class, but whenever I first try an rpg I do it as a long-range caster, usually one with a healing ability, just to play it safe. This is mostly because the first time I ever played an rpg that was what I chose, and they are pretty much the same across all rpgs.
I tend to lean towards casters or caster/melee hybrids, currently planning to play a mage in reckoning after having fun with chakrams on the demo
always a caster
In every single RPG u gotta love a mage! sneaky, intellectual and powerfull!
