So far what we know the horde did is: Went back on their word to help aid the healing in Silithus and used that as a stage to launch a surprise invasion. Rounded up any civilians they came across and executed them. Blighted every area they took control over. Held Furbolg chieftains hostage and forced their people to fight the Night Elves for them, resulting in them being wiped out. Targeted head figures not just of an "opposing" faction, but figures who are part of and even lead some of the major neutral factions responsible for keeping the world safe time and time again.

End of the day, no matter who burned the tree, be it the Alliance trying to keep a group slaughtering their citizens from taking the city, or a third group who were able to accomplish this thanks to the horde, the horde come out as THE evil of this conflict. Not to mention the tree burning would still be on their heads.Comment by JavelinI really like that Saurfang is still maintaining some sense of honor here, gives horde players something to grasp while Sylvanas is going on her killing spree.

As for burning the tree my bet is some third party (old god awakening, Wrathion, whatever) that turns out so the Horde looks like they did it.
Sylvanas has no benefit from it, why would you burn the land you just conquered? Genn is also out of the picture, he might be reckless but he tends to only endanger himself, sacrificing Teldrassil and countless lives to give the middle finger is not like him.Comment by blissfireI've said that it must be someone Alliance side that burns the tree. It's the only thing moral Horde players have left to hope for. The possibility that there's one awful thing they haven't done. Something like Mathias Shaw secretly ordering a strike team to burn it and blame the Horde, giving the Alliance a made-up justification to attack Lordaeron. (Well, assuming the attack on Darkshore wasn't enough to convince Anduin to strike back.)

But, regardless, it will definitely be another case of, "Yeah, the Horde attacked first, and committed what are basically war crimes, but you can't call them the bad guys because..."Comment by DracoldAt this point, the answer to the question who burned the tree cannot possibly absolve the Horde. But it can potentially bring an inner Alliance conflict in case it was somebody from the Alliance. Because the act not just endangered countless of lives, but destroyed the ancient home of the oldest Azeroth based Alliance civilization. If somebody from the Alliance decided to do that, it would create a severe mistrust or hatred inside of the Alliance.
Which is I think a very good reason why nobody from the Alliance did it. As the WoW writing goes, Alliance are good guys and they never have any conflicts between them, except the most superficial and trivial ones. This would be so much unlike anything that ever happened, and it would have a potential to create critical tensions. So it didn't happen. My bet is on the Horde causing it by accident, or on a third party.Comment by Nickname404Yes, yes, Teldrassil was burned by monstrous Genn, by crazed night elves, by suddenly appeared Wrathion, by still powerful Twilight Hammer — by everybody, but not by Saint Sylvanas. Of course, she couldn't doom all Darnassians, she didn't deceive Magni about healing of Azeroth, she didn't throw azerite bombs on this tree, she just walked near. Reasons against it being an Alliance member

There are no quests, discussions, or lore in the rest of the expansion about the conflicts which would result from an Alliance member burning their own capital. Seems highly unlikely Blizzard would forgo that chance for story, or that they would be able to hide it until now.

Horde (Sylvanas) already destroys their own capital. It would be weak writing for Alliance to destroy their own, and no, Blizzard's writing is not that weak.

How exactly would Genn or someone else actually burn Teldrassil? It's not like you could just use a torch, as the fire spreads massively and quickly.

Reasons for it being a Horde attack

To burn the tree that quickly would take a massive weapon, not something done ad hoc by a few characters. A big weapon attack is a great focus for a (currently hidden) cinematic.

We need something at the start of this expansion to show the power of Azerite, since we're going to be focused on it for a couple of years. A big Azerite weapon fits that bill.

Sylvanas has talked about getting Azerite in order to force the Alliance to submit. Of course she would want to put it on display in their first major attack, so it will almost certainly be used in the battle.

Reasons why I think it will be an accident

Sylvanas hasn't talked about destroying the city in any text we've seen, just capturing it.

Blizzard is going out of their way to keep this a secret, which implies something of interest. Straight up Horde destroying the tree isn't interesting, accidental burning would be.

Letting the Alliance mistakenly believe it was intentional rather than an accident is just the sort of conflict Blizzard likes (e.g. Broken Shore Horde retreat at the start of Legion).
