As Islands are receiving a number of changes in Patch 8.1 Tides of Vengeance, including a revamp to the Island Rewards system, our Island writer Sangheilios has updated all of Wowhead's Island Expedition guides!
These guides will cover everything from new rewards like top hats to new items you can buy with the Island currency. Let us know if there's another Islands topic you'd like to see us write about!
Island Overview
Islands have received a number of updates, most notably changes to the weekly quest including Treasure Maps and missions.
In Patch 8.1 Tides of Vengeance, the weekly quests
Azerite for the Alliance
/
Azerite for the Horde
now only require 36,000 Azerite. This lets players reach the cap in as few as 3 Mythic Islands (instead of 3 Mythic Islands and 1 Normal Island).
Completing your Island Weekly quest will ALSO award a
Mysterious Treasure Map
. This treasure map becomes for example,
Treasure Map of Jorundall
. These maps when used will trigger a follower table mission that if successful, generally yield large rewards of additional Azerite.

Island Rewards
Island reward acquisition is massively changed in Patch 8.1. The criteria for qualifying for rare rewards of Island Expeditions has changed for Tides of Vengeance. You may now safely clear an Island Expedition as fast as possible, without having to go around and seek out special enemies. Island Expedition rewards such as mounts, transmog items, pets, and quest items are based on the creatures present on a visit to a particular Island, NOT based on what you kill.
In addition, there are new mounts, pets, toys, and transmog items that can be rewarded at the end of an Island Expedition! All of these have been added to our guide, and here are some of our favorites:
Lord Woofington
Island Thunderscale
Risen Mare
Sleetguard Warboots
Duskhaven Top Hat

Events and Invasions
Island Expedition events and invasion systems are receiving several changes, adding both new mechanics and changing some old ones.
The Unbound Monstrosity Azerite elemental has been added to the list of major invasion events.
More "out-of-theme" enemies are present on every Island Expedition.
New Invasion Event:
Undead.
New Event:
Azerite Ruptures and Extractors.
Many new rare enemies on every Island Expedition.
Bonus Objective items such as Antivenom and Torches are much more visible by a beam of orange light.
All chests and satchels related to invasion events are locked until the nearby rare spawn is defeated.

Island Strategies
We've added this guide after Battle for Azeroth's launch, responding to player feedback that tips and tricks would be helpful, not just descriptions of maps. As the ways to acquire rewards have changed in Patch 8.1, this guide has received a significant revamp.
Azerite score values for killing creatures and looting chests have been adjusted.
Rare Elite creatures give more score.
Non-rare enemies give significantly less score.
Chests / Satchels / Mining nodes in general give less score
Azerite Wounds, significantly more rares, and Azerite Extractors add more sources of gaining score and to counter some of the nerfs above.
Island Expedition rewards are based on enemies present on the Island and NOT what you kill. The "rare-reward farming strategy" is to just play normally at a difficulty you can handle.
The Unbound Azerite elemental event no longer occurs every Island.

Island Maps
Two new Islands are entering the pool of available Islands in Battle for Azeroth Patch 8.1: Tides of Vengeance. These Islands are Havenswood and Jorundall. This brings the total amount of available Islands to 9. Only 3 Islands are available in a given week, therefore it will likely be that a particular Island will appear once every 3 weeks.
We've also updated the guide to indicate what rewards are themed around each Island.

Seafarer Dubloon Currency
While many rewards from Islands have an element of randomness, in Patch 8.1 you can spend Dubloons on reputation tokens, mounts, pets, transmogs, and toys! Here are a few interesting items:
Cranky Crab
- Costs 200
Seafarer's Dubloon
.
Gnarlwood Waveboard
- Costs 300
Seafarer's Dubloon
.
Saltwater Seahorse
- Costs 500
Seafarer's Dubloon
.
Siltwing Albatross
- Costs 1000
Seafarer's Dubloon
.

Advanced AI Teams
Two new teams are coming in Patch 8.1, themed after the Dark Iron Dwarves and Mag'har Orcs.

Is there going to be a cosmetic top hat, or is it just cloth? Cause if the latter, that's lame.

New Invasion Event: Undead.
Is it a hint to what's coming next ? If so will Bolvar finally do something whith the army that he raised in Legion ?

So any word on whether or not the invasion in phase 3 is determined at start of invasion or do we still need to trigger it to find out? Can we safely clear the island in a rush before invasion occurs and still have a chance at what the invasion would've offered? Trying to word this the best I can :)
It's very likely that the system will work similar to how it works today. If you trigger the invasion then you will have a chance to get rewards related to those invading npcs. The only difference in Tides of Vengeance is that you won't have to kill any of them in order to receive related rewards.
This was JUST answered on the forums: now the invasions will always trigger so they will always be part of the potential loot table.

It's just undead mobs risen by a cult to add more variety.
