This spell in this form would be in a category of its own. Most likely useful for a 4 stack Arcane Blast filler so the stacks against spirit don’t instantly stack to death or prevent you from recovering mana. Doesn’t seem great for healing unless the fight was long or you wanted to beef up healing. Going to be interesting to see it’s usefulness.

Can you imagine the damage you could get out of this at 60?

Both this spell and Arcane blast are debuffs, so they'll actually scale with spellpower. On top of that, its a fire spell, which means it'll get ignite, and its an arcane spell so it'll benefit from both warlock curses, and imp scorch, which the ignite will then double dip on.

+60% damage from Arcane Blast, +100% damage from Balefire, +30% damage from Arcane Power, +15% damage from imp Scorch, +10% damage from Curse of Elements, +10% Damage from Curse of Shadow.

Oh, and all those numbers are multiplicative, not additive... So, lets do some math with this, assuming it does similar damage to fireball, 550.

Your last cast of the boss fight, if it crit, would do 6368 damage, with a 3222 damage ignite, with zero spellpower.

Since all of these stacking damage buffs are just that, buffs and not talents, they all scale with your spellpower. That means that the listed spellpower ration of .875 is only true for the first cast on a target with no debuffs. On the imaginary target above your last balefire cast would have a spellpower ratio of 5. Not .5 but 5.0.

A BiS-geared mage could get a 12k crit, which would then cause a 6k ignite, and all it would cost is their world buffs. I don't know about you, but I'm pretty sure that it'll be worth, Especially with ignite stacking strats.

They should change it to where there is something that can drop your stacks. Such as casting a no-fire spell.

Haven't seen anyone mention it, but this is also a pretty clear reference to Balefire from the Wheel of Time series.

repeat 9 times for 9 stacks, 10th stack will kill you
now for 30seconds: spam arcane blast to 4
cast arcane missles
when balefire stacks are again 0 you can repeat entire rotation

I just saw Fel Tear while questing in Desolace @76, 19 as a Mage (it was also visible to my Priest friend). I checked here in Wowhead and saw that this was added in Season of Discovery and no info regarding it.
Since there is no information on it, I wonder if it is related to Phase 3. I saw that mage's get the rune Balefire Bolt by closing a Fel portal (Close Fel Portal) somehow by using Hypnotic Blade as a reagent. (Only reason I know anything about this Phase 3 rune during Phase 2 is because I saw that Mages can get Scroll of the Blade that also cast Imbue Blade on Hypnotic Blade as a reagent and transforms it into Narpas Sword.)

This can all be speculation on my part especially since this "npc"/object is called Fel Tear while mages need to close a Fel Portal. But this is the whole spirit of Season of Discovery, the discovery of what is new and unique. I just hope any of my info is useful to anyone in phase 3 discoveries!

The effects of Balefire Bolt on Paladins Bubble (Divine Shield) is it supposed to be able to penetrate the shield or is it a bug?
